To be or not to be. That's is the question. Cheh cheh! Da start berdrama plak! Ok…Korang tentu kenal dengan Teater Ekamatra kan? Errr lain bang. Yg Ekamatra lagi satu tu ialah band Rock yang popular pada zaman 80' an.

Hari ni AnakMelayu.com dapat bertemu dengan Penghulu atau chip dorang. Saudara Noor Effendy. Dia ni selain menjaga Pentadbiran Teater, dia juga Penerbit, Pelakon, Direktor Artistik, Pelatih dan Pengarang drama!! Fuuuh!! Superman pun boleh give up seh!

Yok! Kita kenal-kenal ngan Teater anak Melayu ni.

It happened a long, long time ago….. last Thursday. Oops sala… 1989. Pengasasnya ialah Lut Ali (yg dah pun ke negeri Kangaroo). For your info,kita ada 3 Teater Melayu di sini. Teater Kami (port dorang kat Cairnhill), Ekamatra (di Cecil Street, betul2 depan kedai Amoy food center!! Yum yum) & last but not least Teater Artistik.

Jadi, kita dengan tak lengah-lengah lagi menyoalnya dengan soalan yang heavy-heavy… kenapa scene Teater Melayu cam mendak gitu? Dan susah sangat ke kalau a simple laymen macam kita-kita ni nak paham seni teater? Jawapan yang diberikan oleh Encik Effendy ni (who really resembles Morpheus - Matrix) pun macam Ceriter Matrix jugak. Kadang-kala 'deep' & action packed', kadang kala 'kelakar'!!!

Secara detail dia jawap yang sebenarnya Teater Melayu reached its peak pada tahun 1990 - 97. 3 faktor yang contributekan the downfall of the scene di sini. Nak tau? Haaa! Ni dia…The culprits are jeng jeng jeng! the media. Why the media? Well, kadang-kadang tu, the writers yang reviewed the play only based on his/her personal judgements dan bukan pasal dari segi sekadar satu angle character, overall production dan tarian. We need people who are trained in this area to do justice. Ye tak yee eh? Kalau asyik put down or sekadar scan through the efforts without understanding made by our artistes pun tak best jugak. Kan?

No.2 adalah …The audience. Di manakah mereka? Macam mana na tarik dorang untuk tengok teater? A lot of audiences that appreciate teater usually has its first taste of that medium in schools (Secondary/Tertiary). It makes good logical sense that Malay Teachers give a glimpse or showcase to its students. Tapi yang tak bestnya & sad thing is a lot of teachers or Malay companies (to whom the teater ask for sponsors) don't see the value of it. Kirakan teater ni semua tak important lah. Sayang lah gitu beb pasal semangat dan space untuk creativity is restrained. Korang imagine aah….criter teater gerek abis….audience 15 org je. Is it because of the ticket price? Yek eleh… Gi konsert Linkin Park $70 dolar bole mampu…takkanlah $20 pon tak bole spare kan?.. Lagi pun separuh dari kaum kita ni suka 'heckling'. Apa tu? Eg: In the 80's Bila band baru abis lagu, and bila si 'heckler' thinks dorang tak best, macam-macam benda lah dorang pekik…sekarang plak, website atau forums yang jadi medium untuk si heckler ni buat kerja dorang… nengok aje some komens yang bands like Jack Steady & ahli Fikir dapat kat website ni aje. Si heckler akan cakap band ni sucks laa..apa laaa, abih tak buat apa-apa to contribute to the scene. To these people… Lu lilek gi posing kat tasik Bukit Batok sua! Empty vessel betul!! Fikirkanlah…

Dan no.3 adalah the talents or artistes themselves. Ha! Apsal plak dengan dorang ni? Ada yang merajuk pasal dapat 'bad review' from the media pas tu, tak nak dekat kan diri to the people and reach out to the masses. Laaa ego trip plak. Ada yang talented tapi tak passionate about the art. Susah jugak tu eh.

Phew! Let's talk about Teater Ekamatra. What to expect from their productions? As Effendy said, the performances will not be mediocre, It is able to Provoke and engage the audience. Fullamak!
They hope to expand the Malay thinking and ideas, by exploring techniques of evolving the language. Eg. The word 'Babi'. Can we see it not only as being haram?

Eh! Someone's entering the office. Rupanya Sani Hussin, an active actor in the teater and drama productions. Semakin rancaklah lagi perbualan kita coz Effendy dah ada tag team partner, while he answers a few phone calls, Sani berikan sedikit sebanyak isu tentang new talents yang nak menceburi bidang ni. For those of you who wants to embark in teater as your stepping stone to immortality..steady aah! Bersiap sedia to expect less atau kadang-kadang no monetary returns first. You must be passionate enough and learn and study the Arts Management course.

Teater Ekamatra also did some festival 'Pesta Peti Putih' in tertiary schools like NIE..etc untuk recruiting ' new blood' and spreading the word about the teater itself. It ran 1999 till 2003, but will continue again in 2006.

Tapi, kita di Anakmelayu.com ni sedang menanti satu production dari mereka yang diberi nama - 'Impenjarament'. Fuh! Tajuk aje dah best! It's about 8 men in the prison. Dari sudut tepi (cam corner kick gitu) it's about the Prison siege psyche in the Malay Society. Tak paham? Pasal pemikiran kita yang terhad dan tak fleksibel dalam masyarakat Melayu. Written by Alin Mosbit. Yang bestnye? It's gonna be multilingual! The actors will speak in bahasa English, Melayu, hokkien and Tamil. Bila ni? Art Festival di Bulan June. Tempat? Esplanade. Mesti gerek punyer!

Sebelum tu, penulis ni nak buat confession. I know nuts about teater. Dulu masuk persatuan Melayu pun ada jugak pegang watak Jin in 1 play & Mr. Birch (For the History fanatics: Org British yang kena bunuh dengan Datuk Maharajalela). Kita di anakmelayu.com ni salute sama dorang-dorang yang mengibarkan bendera seni. Lu orang best ah!
